How to manage long hair in summer
First of all, we have to talk about dealing with long hair in summer.
Once the temperature rises, long hair can become like an extra heating element. And who wants stuff hanging down their back when they’re already irritable from the heat? So the natural reaction is to put it away!
And no, that doesn’t have to be difficult at all. I personally love hair sticks for making really quick updos. These things make dealing with long hair in the summer so much easier!
All you need is a hair stick. (Or even a pencil!) No bobby pins, forgotten or lost hair ties.
The video below shows you my favorite hair stick hairstyle. It takes no more than a few seconds to do!
Now, I even got a solution for you when you don’t have a hair stick or pencil nearby. But, I must warn you, your hair has to really be long for this. Otherwise it’s not possible!
It’s a “magic bun” you can do without any hair tools whatsoever. Just your long hair! You can even modify it into these different hairstyles. All without tools!

How often should i wash my hair in summer
Naturally, we sweat a lot more in summer than in winter. So, of course, you might want to have to adjust your hair washing rhythm to that.
The rule of thumb is: as long as you feel comfortable and your scalp is happy, you’re doing it right! You don’t want to walk around feeling grimy and smelly, but you also don’t have to wash your hair every day simply because it is summer.
Tune in to what’s happening on your own head and go with that!
In general, the question of how often to wash your hair is a pretty personal one and depends on a whole variety of factors. In my post “How often should you wash your hair?” I go into them into detail, so check that out if you want to know more!
In the meantime, you can simply use this handy flowchart to make your decision:

What helps dry hair in the summer?
Another one of the big hair problems in summer is dry hair. Ugh! Life is finally all mellow and bright, why does your hair have to act out now?
Well, unfortunately. sun and salt water are big stressors for your locks. Additionally, you might wash it more often because of all the sweating. All of these things dry your hair out.
I personally almost always use my DIY Aloe honey treatment for hair as a first line of defence. But if you’re spending quite some time at the beach or in the sun, that might not cut it.
In that case, you need to adjust your hair care a little bit.
I have a whole post on hair care for a beach vacation, so make sure to check that out! The short version is this:

Should I oil my hair in summer?
If you clicked through those tips, you might have noticed the tip with the hair oil. And this confuses quite a few people. I’ve had people ask if that doesn’t “fry” their hair. You know, oil and heat. Kinda sounds plausible at first glance, right?
Luckily, that’s not what happens. Oil can actually protect your hair from mechanical damage, and it can help against all those drying influences to make sure your hair can retain some moisture.
So which oil is best for hair in summer?
For the moisturizing effect, use some light sealing oils after a moisturising treatment. I really like Jojoba oil* for that, but almond oil*, grape seed oil* or even sunflower oil* would work, too!
