We will dive into why this cream should be a part of your homemade skin care routine in a second. But before, let me quickly show you the recipe:

DIY face cream recipe

A jar full of white cream or lotion

You will need

  • 1 Nutmeg nut (or equivalent amount of ground nutmeg, like this one*)
  • 100 ml / half a cup of coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon of oil

How to make the homemade face cream

Grate the nutmeg finely. Put it in a pot together with the other two ingredients and bring everything to a boil. Now you just need to wait till about half of the mix has evaporated. This step will get rid of the excess liquids. Afterward, strain the mass and put it in a container of your choice. Make sure you disinfect the container before!

And this is it! Your very own DIY face cream is ready! If you store it in the bathroom or somewhere else at room temperature, use it up within a week. Storing it in the fridge gives you up to 2 months to finish the cream.

Now you are probably wondering: Why nutmeg? Maybe it’s just me, but I haven’t heard about using nutmeg in skin care before stumbling onto this recipe. So naturally, I had to do a little research. Let’s find out what exactly the different ingredients can do for your skin.

Nutmeg benefits for skin

While nutmeg is usually known as a spice, the nut also packs some serious benefits for your skin.

First of all, it has strong antibacterial properties. Everyone knows how much of a problem bacteria on the skin can be. Especially people who have ever dealt with skin problems or even acne. (Believe me, I know what I am talking about. I’ve struggled with painful hormonal acne for years!)

Another benefit of nutmeg is its anti-inflammatory effect.

After reading this you might want to use loads of nutmeg on your skin. So here is a word of caution: Too much nutmeg on your face can cause redness. Also be careful if you have extremely sensitive skin.

Definitely test this nutmeg cream for face on a small patch before you apply it all over!

Coconut milk benefits for skin

Coconut milk for the DIY face cream

Recently everyone has been using coconut oil for hair and face. But did you know that also coconut milk can be a magnificent treatment for your skin?

Similar to coconut oil it helps fight bacteria, as it is antibacterial and antifungal.

The white liquid also works as a great moisturizer. And people gush about how plump and soft their skin feels after a “milk bath”.

Finally – who doesn’t like smelling like coconut? It smells like beach and sun and just soo tasty!

Which oil for your DIY face cream?

You might have noticed that the recipe does not specify which oil to use. This is on purpose as no skin is the same. Any oil will help to make the consistency cream like.

Still, you might want to consider which oil your skin usually likes. Different skin types react differently to different oils. Elizabeth from The Nourished Life wrote an entire blog post on this topic, so go ahead and check it out if you feel you could use some more input on oils.

My favorite oil to use in skincare is technically a wax: Jojoba oil. This one* is 100% pure, and hexane free.

For anything you put on your skin, use similar rules like you would for food. It shouldn’t be damaging to you in any way. No weird chemicals that change your hormones. But that is a topic for another post.

So, there you have it. All you need to know to go and try your DIY face mask with nutmeg and coconut milk. If you do try this recipe, leave me a comment and tell me how you liked it!
