No matter if summer or winter, baby soft feet are awesome to have! And sometimes, when the callused skin or cracked heels seem to take over completely, it seems like there is no way to achieve them, other than visiting a podiatrist.

But if you follow a few simple steps and stick with those for a few weeks, you CAN actually get baby soft feet at home.

Let me show you how!

How can I soften rough feet at home?

In general, you need to follow the following steps to soften up your rough feet:

  1. soak then
  2. treat

Sounds super easy right? And it is, but you might have to do these steps regularly for a while, depending on the state your feet are in right now!

Additionally, you can break the second step, treatments, down into exfoliation and moisturising. As over exfoliating can lead to MORE callouses on your feet, make sure to not overdo this. Secondly, stick to chemical exfoliants and stay away from mechanical peeling solutions. These are for podiatrists.

If you only have a couple of rougher patches on your feet, you can skip the exfoliation step altogether. Moisturizing well will soften up your feet in no time!

What to soak your feet in to make them soft?

So the first step of our soft feet routine is a nice soak. This will soften up the skin and prepare it for the following treatments.

But what should you soak your feet in?

If you want to be a real minimalist about this, you could simply use your daily shower for this step. Water alone will help with the skin soaking.

But, let’s be honest, if you’re reading this, you probably want a little more from your soak!

Oatmeal to moisturize

My favorite bath additive for dry skin is oatmeal. The same effect that makes oatmeal become creamy porridge can turn your bathwater into a very moisturizing “milk”.

It’s super affordable, and if you make sure to use a sink strainer, also a pretty mess-free home remedy for soft feet! Simply add a handful of easy oats to the bath water and there you go!

DIY bath salts

Another option are DIY bath salts. You can find some bath salt recipes here or make up your own. Let your imagination run wild!

Exfoliation

Then it’s time to move on to exfoliation. Like I said, if you only have some slightly rougher patches on your feet, you can skip this step completely to avoid accidentally accelerating the “hard skin” production. (Hyperkeratosis is no fun, y’all!)

But if your feet are in a pretty callused state, it’s time to break out the chemical exfoliants!

One of the most popular treatments is the Kerasal Intensive Foot Repair. (Get it here!*) It’s approved by the American Podiatry Medical Association and will remove signs of cracked heels et cetera in a few days to weeks.

Moisturise

Lastly, you’ll want to moisturise your feet. This step cannot be skipped to get the baby soft feet you’re dreaming of!

My secret weapon for this is Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Daily Skin Therapy*. It’s incredibly rich and saves my dry feet in summer whenever I unreasonably ran around my house barefoot for days.

When I use this cream regularly, I do not need any kind of exfoliation and still manage to keep my feet baby soft. You can get Palmer’s Cocoa butter here!*

Will it remove calluses in one fell swoop? Of course not.

But using this cream regularly will definitely get rid of hard, cracked spots. I promise!

How to keep feet soft and callous free

So now that you’ve done your treatment, your work only begins. In order to KEEP your feet soft and callous free, you have to stick to a good soft feet routine for at least a few weeks.

It doesn’t have to be elaborate, but it should include a daily dose of moisturiser. Make it a habit to moisturise your feet after every shower.

If the cocoa butter is too rich for you for daily usage, I recommend getting something like the Cerave Daily Moisturising Lotion for dry skin*. It doesn’t leave a film, so your feet won’t be slippery throughout the day. You can get it here!*

Then, in the evening, you can use a heavier moisturiser before going to bed. A “soft baby feet overnight treatment”, if you will.

Lastly, be mindful of your barefoot walking. I know, it’s hot in summer and you want to get rid of every bit of unnecessary fabric. But walking barefoot at home will surely dry out your feet. Which, no surprise, leads to cracked skin…
