It’s finally summertime and we want to spend as much time as possible outside, enjoying the weather. In my childhood that meant playing in the garden all day long. Nowadays I am living in a big city apartment, so my balcony has to substitute for that garden experience. In order to make that work, I went on a search for the most beautiful balcony garden ideas. While still making sure that they are affordable and practical, of course.

Beautiful balcony garden ideas: Balcony furniture
Let’s start with the core of all balcony decoration: the balcony furniture! The kind of furniture you choose determines the whole flair of your little balcony garden. And depending on how you want to set everything up, you will need at least a few items.
Storage for balcony gardening tools
One must-have item is some kind of storage for your gardening tools. In my case, it cannot be too small, as it needs to fit a huge watering can.
(Unless your faucet is directly next to your balcony, do yourself a favor and invest in a big watering can. Otherwise watering the plants gets frustrating really fast! I have this one* and it made the watering much, much easier.)
So when I researched outdoor storage options, I quickly realized that it should be multi-purpose. There is limited space on a balcony, after all.
Balcony storage ideas: deck box as coffee table
After a while of searching, I found this cute deck box. (Get it here*!)
Just put a cute tablecloth on it and it’s ready for fancy balcony breakfast!
Because of the height of the deck box, I would probably combine it with some nice floor pillows. (You can buy those here*.)
Balcony furniture for small balconies
Are you rather looking for ideas for a really small balcony? Then a container box might be a better idea for you. It could also double-serve as a bench.
Generally, with small spaces you want to use every corner, to not let any precious space go unused. For that purpose angular furniture simply is the better option. Plus, the storage is much bigger, too! 150 gallons or 568 liters of storage space. Not bad, huh? You can order the container box/bench here*.
Beautiful balcony garden ideas: Flower pot shelves and balcony hanging planters
Okay, now that we’ve got the tool storing out of the way, let’s look at some actual plant solutions.
Using a hanging planter like this one helps a lot if you have very little space. In winter you can simply move the whole thing inside. And to be honest, I simply find it very cute. (You can order it here.*)
If you have a little more space, you could also go for a bigger balcony flower stand. I really like the idea of a wooden storage rack like this one:
It’s super decorative in itself and fits all kinds of plants. And if it fits your balcony “shape”, you could also use it for a little bit of privacy. If this shelf is interesting to you, you can have a look at it here*.
Beautiful balcony garden ideas: Balcony herb garden ideas
Alright now on the herbs! Because what is a balcony without a little balcony herb garden?
Other people who’ve bought them said they don’t rust, so that’s an advantage as well. (I don’t know about you. But I always wonder if the things I buy for my balcony will withstand some “weather stress”.)
You can also take off the “hooks”. This way you can simply use them as inside flower pots until your herbs are ready to be grown outside.
I am not so sure about the colors yet. Maybe I’ll simply get some spray paint to make them fit my balcony color scheme. (Colors matter, you guys!)

Beautiful balcony garden ideas: Balcony lighting ideas
Okay, for me, no balcony is complete without some nice lights! Sitting outside in the evening, feeling a light summer breeze and seeing everything in a warm, soft light… Just the best! So I cannot talk about beautiful balcony garden ideas without talking about balcony lighting.
I personally really like any kind of string light. For example these really cute white lantern string lights on the left. (Get them here.*)
But not every balcony works with string lights. Sometimes you don’t have a possibility to hang something. Sometimes it would just be in the way. In that case, I usually go for more vintage looking lanterns like the on the right. (Buy it here.*) Makes it instantly look cozier, doesn’t it? Sigh. I love balcony lights.
Got your own beautiful balcony garden ideas?
So at this point, I had to stop my research. For now. I want to build the balcony of my dreams step by step. And even though those items are all practical (storage!) and pretty affordable, I don’t want to spend too much at once either.
But that doesn’t mean I am not interested in your beautiful balcony garden ideas! Do you have a balcony? How do you use it? What do you grow? Let me know in the comments!
