Just like any fibre, hair can break under too much stress. Your hair ends rub on your clothes, get brushed etc. It's mechanics!
The older the hair ends, the weaker the cuticle gets... and then it splits. So if you haven't dusted your tips recently, it's completely normal to find some split ends!
Heat styling your hair is super damaging to the cuticle, for example. (Swipe up to learn how to dry your hair without heat!)
Super tight ponytails can cause damage too! Use hair-friendly hair ties and try different styles. Maybe consider hair sticks if your hair is long enough.
Using natural materials decreases the chance to get split ends from brushing your hair. Plastic increases it.
