The KonMari method is an amazing system to declutter your whole life. And build a new relationship with your surroundings.

The best way to learn everything about this method is, of course, Marie Kondo's book. Here you learn just the basic steps of the Konmari method.

This step is the one everyone is afraid of before trying the Konmari method. But with Marie Kondos order of tidying, and her special way of doing that, it actually becomes enjoyable!

Decluttering

For every category, you will take EVERYTHING in that category that you own and put it on the floor. In the same room. Forgetting something means you get rid of it. Period.

And then you go through the items one by one. Touching them and asking yourself, if they spark joy. Only items that give you a joyful feeling stay.

So now let's look at the main categories of decluttering in the Konmari method. (You can also find a detailed, printable checklist below!)

Decluttering categories

Konmari categories

clothes (9 sub categories)

books (4 sub categories)

papers (7 sub categories)

Komono* (12 sub categories)

Memorabilia (4 sub categories)

*Komono means something like "miscellanea"

Now things need their permanent place. One suggestion by Marie Kondo is to “keep like with like”. Also make it easy to put things away. Not to get them.

Organizing

These are the main steps of the Konmari method. If you want more details, you'll find a more in-depth explanation below. And, again, I also really recommend the book!
